PALO DURO CANYON
We left Oklahoma City Sunday mid morning. Our first stop was in Clinton to visit the Route 66 Museum. I didn’t realize there are only about 33 Route 66 museums along the road. I did pick up the Route 66 Traveler’s Guide for a cheap 13.95. I think we have ridden about 10 miles of the old route and let’s just say it’s not an RV friendly road. I’m thinking a bike ride is in the future for the Old Mother Road. The Guide did though pay immediate dividends when it came to park for the night. See below.
We found this really cool canyon yesterday outside of Amarillo thanks to the aforementioned handy dandy Traveler’s Guide. They call it the Grand Canyon of Texas. It is called Palo Duro Canyon. Met a lady and her daughters at the scenic overlook who said this was better than the Grand Canyon. I guess we are going to find out if that is true. Last night there was a little musical at the amphitheater called Texas. I made it to intermission and hiked back home. This is really our first camping edition on this trip and I love it. We have electric and water woohoo. I even busted out the washer/dryer last night to do a load of clothes. Well this place is beautiful and we didn’t even have a reservation. It might be the best-kept secret in Texas. (note to self, there is no cell service when your down 1,000 ft in a 100 mile long canyon.)
Tonight we made it to beautiful Gallup, New Mexico and of course there is a rodeo going on which precluded us from our first KOA experience. Jeez a rodeo in Gallup of all places. We had a bunch of rain today that started after I took the cover off my bike. So here we spend another night in a Wal Mart parking lot. Tomorrow should be Meteor Crater in Arizona!! God Bless, Art.
Palo Duro is great! The thing we liked about it is that you can drive down into it!
ReplyDeleteIf you get a chance, stop at the Blue Moon CAfe on 66 in Santa Rosa NM. Great old hotel and cafe from the bygone days!
