As we wander thru this wonder of a country and I see all the homes, it makes me stop and ask. Is the American dream all that it is cracked up to be? I’ve always wondered why the government encouraged and rewarded home ownership through tax deductions, incentives and recently massive loans to people who couldn’t afford them. Is America’s dream the same as God’s dream for us? Is buying a home with a 30 yr mortgage our life goal? I’m beginning to understand the government’s viewpoint of home ownership. I think it boils down to control. If they can convince you to get married, mortgaged and have some kids, your chances of moving or being mobile are reduced tremendously. Focus instead on your career, your job and you have the illusion of “security” unfortunately you also lose a lot of your freedom along the way. Can you imagine, however unlikely, a society that packed up the teepee, or rv or tent or boat and followed the sun or the next job, etc? I mean how could they ever track you down (control) to collect their revenues or fill out their census? I’m not meaning to sound like some tax evasion guy, I’m just thinking out loud as to why we have become such a “fixed” society. I wonder if the Indians enjoyed packing up the community and moving several times a year? I think somewhere along the way we have lost a lot of the “adventure” in life. Anyways, I write all that to say I guess it’s time to sell the house and cut that tie in my life to a “fixed” lifestyle. God Bless, Art.
up until around 10,000 years ago that's what ALL humans did - hunt, fish, and gather - following the sun and the results of it's energy (i.e. animals & plants)and living a completely mobile lifestyle. that's a relatively short slice of time. only after we became sedentary did it become necessary to have a permanent residence. fast forward to the u.s. and capitalism - we have the highest percentage of home "owners" per capita in the world! and for what? you said it best, "it boils down to control." great post - i think the road is finding you as much as you are finding the road!
